At Tower Place, CBRE has set out a clear, strategic vision to eliminate single-use plastics and build a culture of sustainability throughout its site. The team’s flagship initiative aims for 100% elimination of single-use plastics within three years - and they’ve already achieved an impressive 80% reduction in just 12 months. Their approach integrates operational action with people-focused engagement, demonstrating how impactful change is possible when sustainability becomes part of everyday culture. We spoke to Zameer Muhammad, General Manager at CBRE Tower Place, to find out more about their achievements.
Eliminating Plastics, Raising Standards
CBRE’s progress at Tower Place reflects a comprehensive, multi-year plan built on cross-team collaboration and active engagement. Key actions have included phasing out plastic straws, utensils, and cups, alongside incentivising the use of reusable alternatives. The success of these efforts is grounded in education and engagement through regular workshops, sustainability training for staff and events like Waste Awareness Day, beach cleans and litter picking where they have fostered a culture of environmental responsibility.
CBRE Tower Place also addressed more complex challenges around food delivery packaging by working closely with suppliers to identify and trial sustainable alternatives. In parallel, broader measures in their site-wide sustainability plan - from waste audits to textile recycling - have boosted the site’s recycling rate from 66.8% to 74.5% since early 2024, with improved communication helping drive lasting behaviour change.
The Value of Being a CCAS Member and Award Winner
In 2024/25, alongside being a finalist in the Communication and Engagement category, CBRE Tower Place was awarded a Commendation in the Plastic Free City category - a recognition they describe as a rewarding and morale-boosting experience for the team.
The award raised CBRE Tower Place’s profile, reinforced staff engagement, and helped demonstrate that their efforts have a meaningful, visible impact. Participation in the CCAS as a member has also encouraged ongoing reflection, learning, and ambition - turning sustainability from aspiration into action.
“Being shortlisted and ultimately winning the Clean City Commendation Award an award was an enriching experience. It was a recognition of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility and a celebration of the hard work the Tower Place team consistently puts into maintaining high standards.
Others participating in the CCAS can expect a highly professional and supportive experience. From the application process to the awards ceremony, this journey encourages reflection, improvement and a sense of pride in your site or organisation. A major highlight for us was connecting with other businesses and sites equally passionate about creating a cleaner, greener city.”
Being part of the Clean City Award Scheme played a significant role in supporting CBRE Tower Place’s sustainability journey. For them, it has provided a structured framework that encourages continuous improvement in waste management, recycling, energy use, and overall environmental responsibility.
One of the most significant benefits has been the motivation it gives their team. “Knowing we are working towards clear, recognised standards has created a shared sense of purpose. The scheme has also helped us stay updated on best practices and connect with like-minded organisations, allowing us to learn from others and share our successes.” Zameer Muhammad, General Manager at CBRE Tower Place
Mr Muhammad encourages any organisation - no matter where they are on their journey - to consider joining the CCAS and applying for an Award. His message to others: you don’t need to be perfect. What matters is a clear commitment to progress and a willingness to learn.
“I would highly recommend that other businesses in the Square Mile join the Clean City Award Scheme as members. Being part of CCAS has been an incredibly positive experience. It offers clear guidance, recognition and support for businesses looking to improve their environmental performance, whether you're just beginning or already well into your sustainability journey.”
